Doug ADSR Envelope - 4U

The SetonixSynth DOUG is a simple-yet-powerful single ADSR module, made to deliver a wide variety of useful envelope styles in a small package. A true WYSIWYG design, the user can patch Gates, Triggers, or Square-Wave LFO’s into Doug’s Gate and Trigger inputs and quickly dial in the perfect envelope for percussion, rave stabs, ambient swells, you name it! Perfect for obsessive twiddlers.

The Doug ADSR is at its core meant to be a user-friendly, simple adaptation of the venerable AS3310 envelope generator, itself a clone of the earlier CEM3310 designed by Doug Curtis, this module’s namesake. This chip offers a full analog ADSR with the addition of a few components, and anyone interested in the process behind this module should definitely check out the AS3310 datasheet.

A cursory glance at the above datasheet will probably intimidate many novices, and with good reason: an ADSR envelope can be a complicated thing, with many different parameters and methods for controlling all manner of things, including possible functions that usually aren’t very musically useful.

DOUG is designed to be an antidote to this, offering some simple ways to get four-stage ADSR modulation happening, plus some other fun envelope types, happening in the 4U system without much fuss. So go ahead, patch in that sequencer or keyboard and you’ll be carving out lovely contours in no time!
